Last letter of Marie-Antoinette - also known as Marie-Antoinette’s will addressed to her sister in law Madame Elisabeth.

“The 16 [Octo] ber [1793] at 4 am.”

“To you, my sister, I write for the last time, I have been condemned not to a shameful death, that is so only for criminals, but to join your brother. Like him innocent, I hope to show the same firmness as him in his last moments. I am calm as it is for my consience is not to blame. I have a deep regret to abandon my poor children, you know that I existed only for them and you, my good and tender sister, you, who has sacrificed in your friendship everything  to be with us, in what position I leave you. I have learned through the advocacy of the trial that my daughter was separated from you. Alas, the poor child, I dare not write to her, she would not receive my letter. I do not even know if this one will reach you. Receive for the two of them, my blessing. I hope that one day, when they are older, that they can meet with you and enjoy your entire tender care. That they both think that I have been their inspiration: the principles and the exact execution of their duties are the base of life […]”.
